Investing In The Right IRAs For Retirement
Saving money for retirement is the main concern for most people. People usually save money in a 401K plan or have an IRA. The main concern is to establish some type of retirement account that can grow over time. In many cases, a Roth IRA is the preferred investment, while others look toward mutual funds. The problem is which IRA is best. Let’s look to the U.S. Government for the answer.
According to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, most people, and investors as well, go after IRAs for their retirement funding. There are many types of IRAs available for you to invest in. You will just need to evaluate each type and determine which IRA will work for you.
Different Types of IRAs
IRAs have been around for 30 years. Ever since the US Tax Law of 1981, the annual contribution limit of IRAs has gone up. With the increase limit in contributions, more IRA investments are now available. With so many options available, which one is the best one to invest in? To know your options, here are common IRAs available today:
Traditional IRA: The traditional IRA came about on September 2, 1974, and is simply a savings plan whereby you contribute a certain tax deductible amount, which for those 50 under, it is $4000, but for those 50 plus, the amount is $5000. The traditional IRA was created for the purpose of providing employees, who didn’t have pensions, a way to save their money toward their retirement. This IRA has no restrictions.
Roth IRA: The Roth IRA was created in 1997 as a part of the Tax Payer Relief Act. Individuals can invest in it using tax-free dollars and can take a distribution that is tax free. The only drawback is that Roth IRAs are not tax-deductible and they do have a maximum amount, which for 2007 is $4000 for those 50 years or less, or $5000 for those 50 years and older. With the Roth IRA, there are no restrictions.
Roth IRA Mutual Funds: Roth IRA mutual funds are based on stocks, bonds, or even money market funds. You can buy into each one or all of them. The choice is yours. And you are not set to a specific limit or cap. You can even sell and buy shares at any time, and use your capital gains to reinvest. You can start this type of mutual fund for as low as $100.
Most people invest in mutual funds since they can diversify more of their money. Most IRA interest rate is around 4.26% to 4.35%. Of course, this can also depend on the type of IRA you apply for.
